The Society of Black Alumni’s Response to WKU’s Implementation of House Bill 4 (HB4)
Hilltopper Family,
We write today with deep concern and profound disappointment regarding the recent actions taken by Western Kentucky University in implementing HB4 and related measures that directly impact diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts across the institution.
This year, The Society of Black Alumni is celebrating its 30th anniversary. And for more than three decades, has served as a pillar of advocacy, scholarship, and community for Black students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Our mission has always centered on uplifting the Black Hilltopper experience—ensuring that those who come after us have access to the support, resources, and community that define our shared legacy.
Recently, The Society was informed of the university’s plans related to HB4 compliance and presented with options for how to move forward if we wished to remain officially associated with and operationally supported by the institution. However, the options presented would not have allowed the organization to fully uphold the mission. Therefore, after careful consideration and discussion, the board has decided not to assimilate under these conditions and will instead move forward as an independent organization and are currently working toward official 501(c)(3) status.
This decision was not made lightly. It reflects our unwavering commitment to preserve the integrity of our mission, protect our endowed scholarships, and ensure donor contributions continue to reach the students and communities for whom they were created. Our independence is not an act of separation—it is an act of preservation.
We are deeply disappointed by the lack of transparency and collaboration surrounding these institutional decisions and remain concerned about the long-term impact on spaces and programs that have long supported marginalized students at WKU. Still, we are steadfast in our resolve to ensure that the legacy of Black excellence on the Hill continues to thrive.
Our Goals Remain Clear
Safeguard our funds and scholarships so they continue to directly support the students, organizations, and initiatives we aim to serve.
Build sustainable structures to ensure our organization thrives for generations to come.
Amplify the voices of alumni and students through mentorship, advocacy, and continued community programs and engagement.
To Our Students
We see you, we stand with you, and we will continue to fight for your ability to thrive authentically and unapologetically on the Hill.
To Our Alumni
We invite you to stand alongside us—through mentorship, advocacy, philanthropy, and engagement—as we shape this next chapter together. Your support and presence are essential to sustaining the foundation laid by those who came before us.
Thank You
We also extend our gratitude to the staff, faculty, and partners who have championed diversity and inclusion within the university. Your dedication has transformed lives and created spaces where Black students could see themselves reflected and celebrated. We honor your work and will carry it forward.
The path ahead may be challenging, but we are Hilltoppers—rooted in perseverance, grounded in community, and driven by purpose. Together, we will continue to build, protect, and celebrate the enduring legacy of Black excellence at Western Kentucky University and beyond.
In solidarity,
The Society of Black Alumni
